Building a Social Contract

As a part of Student Orientation, in small groups, we decided how we wanted to design a classroom space within our Dayton location. The purpose was to give students control of their learning environment and make a place that we believe is functional. This pertains to our previous Action Project, where we had to discuss what made a suitable classroom and what we can change from standard classrooms. Before creating the space, we created a Social Contract regarding what we expected from each other and teachers. Our list said that students should be engaged and curious, as well as encouraging one another. Teachers should be willing to accept feedback and have one-on-one time.

My group was assigned the Cabin, a big open room with bookshelves, a whiteboard, desks, and windows. As a group, we decided to arrange the desks in a U-shape towards the whiteboard. We wanted it this way that way, all the students could not just see the teacher, but also their fellow peers. We believed this was important as it would classes more engaging. As a school, we believe that students can also be teachers. It is validating to see other people's reactions in a discussion rather than the back of their heads. As a simple touch, we also want to add plants to bookcases as greenery can help liven up the empty room.

Overall, I think this was a good AP as I understood what others perceived as a "good classroom" and what they want to see in that space. However, one challenge was that we quickly ran out of room due to social distancing and often rearranged the desks around that way; we could 14 people and keep them 3 feet apart.
